Hokkaido is located in Japan, on the northernmost of the country’s four main islands. It’s the second largest island in Japan, and is separated from the largest island, Honshu, by the Tsugaru Strait. The two islands are connected by the Seikan Tunnel, an undersea railway.

Hokkaido is known for its beauty, with national parks, hot springs, caldera lakes, ski resorts, and Mount Fuji lookalikes. It also has a cool climate, with refreshing summers and significant snowfall in the winter. The island has coastlines on the Sea of Japan to the west, the Sea of Okhotsk to the north, and the Pacific Ocean to the east and south. The center of the island is mountainous, with volcanic plateaux, and it also has multiple plains.

Hokkaido is home to the Indigenous Ainu people, and has been developed over the last 150 years, with motorways connecting towns and cities. The island has 180 municipalities, including 35 cities, 130 towns, and 15 villages. Sapporo, located in the southwest on the Ishikari River, is the administrative headquarters.
